Fast fashion is ruining streetwear and its only getting worse as each day passes. Fast fashion is a contemporary term used by fashion retailers to express that designs move from catwalk quickly in order to capture current fashion trends. The leaders of fast fashion sell out their collections very quickly, so what does that mean? It means that more clothes have to be made at a very fast rate. As a said before, people are starting to realize that they can get the same type of clothing big name brands offer for a cheaper price. But is that price actually worth it, are you getting the same quality? Everyone wants to save a dollar, as do I, but sometimes those few extra bucks you're spending me go a long way. Its all about the quality of the product at the end of the day, and if you have seen what actually goes into making these products I’m sure your tone will change. Companies are pumping out new collections every other week now it seems, which is a very big change from recent years as the whole season collection has gone out the window. Its not just streetwear that is being effected, it is really every kind of fashion.
A lot of these companies/brands live by the motto “bring it in, sell it out”. They’re getting the product at a rapid pace, and selling it just as fast. How though do you think that they are getting their product so fast? People don’t see what goes on behind the scenes. A documentary titled “The True Cost” opened my eyes to the world of fast fashion. It shows how clothes are made, and how people from different countries are pretty much treated as slaves while they create clothing. Starved, working for little to no pay, and even succumbing to death, fast fashion has taken a heavy toll on those involved in the creation of the clothes for these companies. I was honestly disgusted and sad upon seeing what goes into making these products. People are treated like shit, so brands can keep up with the times.
What does any of this have to do with streetwear? Some brands won’t admit to it, but they mimic what other brands do. They rip off products that they see from other brands and run with it as if they created it. That's the problem with fashion in general. It’s very hard to have your own idea and share it with the world as solely yours because its easy for someone to go out find the materials and create the same exact thing, all the while adding there own twist to it. Brands that cost less are putting out the same products as brands that cost more money. Don’t get me wrong; I am all for a bargain, BUT at the end of the day it is all about quality. I’ve come to find that a lot of companies don’t care as much about quality as they do about making a dollar. Today, I am willing to spend more money on clothing as long as I am getting a product that will satisfy me and last long.
It is worthy to note that not everyone knows about fast fashion, as well as the companies that are apart of it. Which in turn means that there is no end in sight to fast fashion. If you ever have a moment, please check out the documentary “The True Cost”. I am sure it will open your eyes as it did mine, as I am more conscious than ever before as to how my money is spent on clothing. Brands that I supported at one time will never get a dollar from me again, check it out and see if these are brands that you're currently giving your money to.
