1989 Spike Lee joint "Do The Right Thing" not only shed light serious issues in the world, but it also displayed an array of fashionable folks. The movie put Bed-Stuy culture in the forefront and we got a look into many different styles. In a lot of the scenes, the scenery or background was bright, or popped which put a lot more emphasis on the clothes that the characters were wearing. A lot of the older characters in the movie were seen in beach / linen type shirts with designs on them and pants. Even Samuel L. Jackson who played Mister Señor Love Daddy (The DJ) was shown sporting a nice button down shirts and always wore a hat.
Separation in the movie was not only by race, but also by costume. We saw the Italians (Sal, Pino & Vito) dressing in shirts and pants, primarily white and black, while we saw the African Americans add color and creativity to their outfits. The other characters in the movie such as Radio Raheem, Buggin Out and Mookie all added flavor into what they wore. Whether it was an accessory or a certain type of shoe these characters stood out. Buggin out had on necklaces to display his individuality and we even seen him in a pair of Jordan’s that he gets scuffed up in an epic scene of the movie.
In the same scene Martin appeared in what was his debut on the big screen. Mookie started things off in the beginning of the movie when he sported his Jackie Robinson Jersey. There was also Radio Raheem who wore his signature gold rings and vintage tee shirts. The older generation in the movie didn’t understand the younger generation, from their attitudes to the clothes that they wore, and it is still like that to this day. They were not scared to express themselves and I like that the most. There are plenty of styles to go around in the movie from Nike’s to Jerseys to Jordan’s and plenty of star power such as Spike Lee, Danny Aiello, and the beautiful Rosie Perez. This movie set things up moving forward for style and is a staple in black culture. If you haven’t already I advise you to check out the film
